The St James' team who visited Nepal in August 2008 are raising money for 'Sahara'. 'Sahara' (which means respectful care) is a project to build and run a home for destitute elderly people in Lamachaur, just north of Pokhara.

It is the vision of Junkiri Nepali, a Christian lady with a vision to serve the needy.  She has a small plot of land she will give for this building, her old house will need to be knocked down, and a two storey house built (right). This will house about 10 residents. Planning permission is now agreed and construction will start soon.

The home will be run by trustees with Junkiri looking after the residents. Her running costs will mean a year for one resident is the same cost as 5 days in a UK care home!

Tabora Cathedral Building Committee

Retired architect John Burden had a vision for 'Raising the Roof' of churches in Africa but died before his last project, of a cathedral in Tabora, was realised.  In his memory Dr Ray Latimer took John's mantle to see his vision brought to reality through money given at John's memorial service and since.  Once the roof was on the building the potential for rainwater harevsting became apparent and the tithe from a gift to St James' enabled this project to go ahead in 2008 under the supervision of engineering student Richard Cunliffe.

The cathedral will be offically opened in July 2009.

The story so far:

Richard Wallis, Executive Director of Mission Possible UK, visited Rwanda in 2005 and on a Sunday morning shared the need at St James’ for a new Christian Secondary School on a hillside a few miles outside Kigali.  The 2002 census indicated that only 12% of Rwandans benefit from secondary education.

Though no appeal was made, the Holy Spirit touched people that Sunday morning and those present pledged sufficient to purchase a chunk of land on the hillside. Subsequently, St James’ mission fund, together with individual members of the church, contributed towards the purchase of additional land for the school, the funding of the first classroom block and the installation of electricity.

A member of the church is now exploring a Swim Rwanda project, swimming the width of Rwanda over a week, to raise funds for text books - 6000 lengths of the local pool.

In January 2009, the school was attended by 230 pupils with plans to expand to 740 in 2012.
